The most recent and ongoing projects of the Life Healthcare Foundation include the following:
In partnership with the South African Council for the Blind, through its Prevention
of Blindness Project: 33 195 screenings have been completed; over 8 126 cataract
operations have been done; 8 735 spectacles issued and 8 527 other medical conditions
In partnership with Habitat for Humanity (HFH) Life Healthcare staff members built three houses in Orange Farm, south of Johannesburg.
The Group Foundation in partnership with the Life Vincent Pallotti Hospital has
committed to provide free surgery and hospitalisation for one talented athlete per
month (provincial or national level) who would not otherwise be able to afford a
procedure. Athletes over 16 years from financially disadvantaged backgrounds who
have been identified as potential provincial level athletes will also be considered.
This project involves a number of other service providers, including physiotherapy,
physical rehabilitation and psychology services.
This successful employee involvement programme has been in existence for 14 years
and has touched the lives of countless disadvantaged children over the years. Each
business unit adopts and supports a children’s organisation in a bid to improve
their lives. There are 78 projects currently underway with an annual spend of R1.1
In partnership with the College of Medicine SA, 13 doctor sub specialist bursaries
were awarded this year. Life Healthcare has committed to spending R13 million over
six years (a total of R78 million) to pay for the training of 32 doctor sub specialists.
A donation of college fees, uniforms and books were granted to two orphaned students who were in foster care in missionary schools.
93 Cataract surgeries were performed at various Life hospitals during the financial
year. To date +- 11 000 free surgeries have been performed.
670 shoes and raincoats were donated to rural school children via a local radio telethon.
Five mobile libraries have been donated to date to disadvantaged schools.
