Our team

Our facilities

Theatres
The state of the art theatre complex is equipped with the latest technology for all aspects of orthopaedic surgery. Dedicated teams of surgical nursing staff ensure efficiency, continuity and a high standard of care in theatre.

High care
The high care unit situated adjacent to the theatre complex allows for individual monitoring of post-operative patients following more major procedures. Patients with major medical conditions are individually cared for by the highly trained nursing staff and doctors are close on hand to deal with any emergencies.

Ward
The 36-bed ward is geared for orthopaedic patients and the orthopaedically trained nursing staff provides high quality of care. Protocols for management of each orthopaedic specialty ensure that staff is well versed in the requirements of all post-operative patients. A physiotherapy suite conveniently situated within the ward allows easy access for post-operative mobilisation of patients.

Life Support Unit
Life Vincent Pallotti Hospital possesses a Life Support Unit – a free medical emergency response service to Pinelands, the Southern Suburbs, Cape Town CBD and surrounding communities. This service comprises a dedicated response vehicle equipped with state-of-the-art equipment, staffed by advanced life support trained paramedics, who are able to respond to medical emergencies 24-hours a day, 7 days a week. All a resident has to do is call 0860 532 532 and a paramedic will be dispatched to attend to the situation.

It is to be noted that International SOS receives all calls and should the paramedic already be attending another incident, another service provider will be dispatched to attend the situation.

Radiology
The fully digitalised radiology suite allows a quicker service to patients and X-rays are sent directly via intranet to the surgeons’ rooms. An open MRI will be installed in the near future, allowing for high quality scans at lower cost. The open scanner does not have the enclosed tunnel and is therefore more suitable for claustrophobic patients.

Coffee bar and lounge
A coffee bar and lounge provide light meals and an area for patients and their visitors to relax.

Orthotics shop
The orthotics shop located opposite reception in the main foyer is stocked with all the appliances required for orthopaedic patients, and is manned by qualified orthotists.

Surgeons
The surgeons are all super-specialised and only practice in their specific field of orthopaedic surgery. Most are associated with the University of Cape Town’s Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Groote Schuur and are involved in teaching and research. Different surgical units include hip and knee arthroplasty, knee and sports injuries, foot, ankle and paediatric orthopaedics, shoulder and elbow, hand and upper limb, spinal, tumour and reconstructive surgery, and trauma orthopaedics.

Conference facilities
An elegant conference facility provides an ideal setting for clinical meetings and is linked to the theatre complex, enabling video conferencing for post-graduate teaching.

Associated units
The hospital is linked to the Orthopaedic Sports Clinic at the Sports Science Institute.
